I want to leave a review of my rhinoplasty experience with Dr. Kim HyungTaek at Kowon Plastic Surgery Clinic. Since this is my first time getting any kind of plastic surgery, I feel like it would be helpful to let my opinions be known about the clinic I decided to go with for my primary rhinoplasty. All opinions are my own, just hope that this is helpful to anyone doing research.
Online Consultation
NaverMap: 코원성형외과의원, 110 Dosan-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. (In same building as KBL sport association)
I came to Korea wanting to get a double eyelid surgery but also wanting opinions on my nose since I was insecure about my alar size. I used translator named Ryan (Kakao ID: Ryankim13) and he helped arrange my consultation day. I originally was going to only go with 1st button for rhinoplasty and Ryan recommended that I need to visit more than 1 clinic consultation. I didn’t do additional research and asked if he could recommend me some, we went to BT and Kowon in addition to 1st button. Ryan said Kowon is popular among locals and Japanese people (since they have a translator on site). I reached out using the Kakaotalk and was able to set up a consultation.
Consultation with Dr. Kim
JuYeon was my consultant, she was very friendly and was always smiling when greeted. She speaks some English but I had Ryan with me so it wasn’t a problem. Dr. Kim is able to understand English and is able to communicate via Ryan and Papago (during post-op laser treatments).
The consultation comes in 3 phases usually (except for 1st button since the Doctor does his own consultation).
1. Talk with the consultant to tell them what you want, they will also ask for reference pictures (mine was IU) and write down your main concerns. Take CT scan, take before pictures from all angles. Ask any questions.
2. Speak with the surgeon and tell him your concern, Dr. Kim will take a front and side picture to throw it up on the monitor and photoshop what the potential ending could look like (obviously more refined than quick photoshop pictures). Ask any questions.
Here’s what was recommended:
Main concern: Alar Reduction for my wide alars and unevenness
Tip Plasty (using ear cartilage): to extend the tip and make alar seem smaller
Correction of Deviated Septum (confirmed via CT scan)
Bridge: He said it was high enough so no need to do anything else
3. Speak with the consultant again to discuss prices and ask for available dates. Since I had other consultations but also need to research on them. I said I would contact them again after thinking about it.
Booking & Negotiation
I consulted with other clinics before deciding on Kowon. Since I didn’t have any knowledge about BT or Kowon, I wanted more time to decide. Ryan was very helpful and even told me that if I’m unsure, should just do double eyelid surgery this year and come back once I made up my mind. Ryan also warned me that the reviews on purseforum or Reddit may be biased due to discount being given, but surprisingly they don’t ask for a positive or negative review. Just what I think of the process and of them. He said that even if the consultation or the doctor is super nice, what really matters is the before and after pictures and if I like the final result.
After researching on their Instagram and forum posts for a whole day, I told Ryan that I will be going with them for rhinoplasty and double eyelid with Eyeho. The surgeons and Ryan told me that it is best to do both on the same day because swelling wouldn’t have peaked yet and that double eyelid surgery should be first which makes sense. Ryan helped negotiating a surgery date and pricing that fit my budget. I highly recommend getting a translator like Ryan to navigate communication and negotiations, even for places like BT that provides their own translator.
Procedure Day
Ryan picked me up from Eyeho and we went to Kowon afterwards. Since I was a little bit early for my surgery (1 hour), they had me in a room to rest and had deswelling laser on for the double eyelid surgery. Prior to surgery, the nurse will inject a medication subcutaneously to determine allergy (possibly for antibiotics such as penicillin class) since they gave me a medication script afterwards. The surgery process was smooth. I met with Dr. Kim and the team to review the plan. Ryan assisted with paperwork, picking up medication, and I had a friend picked me up post-surgery. The anesthesia was the only painful part, since they got a vein by the arm instead of my AC area, but I quickly fell asleep and felt nothing during the surgery (thank goodness, since double eyelid surgery was painful since I wasn’t nerve blocked enough). Recovery was manageable—minimal bleeding.
Recovery
The first week was relatively easy. Pain was minimal, until I accidentally sneezed, and it made bleeding and pain worse, but that went away. Also makes me feel safer that I see them daily due to all the de-swelling laser sessions. Swelling worsen from day 2 to 7, I looked like those dogs that got bit bees. My whole face was circular pretty much, but walking around helped a lot with de-swelling. Yellow bruising did happen, which gradually faded. Pretty much wore a cap the whole time I was in Korea.
Follow-ups on day 2 included removing nasal packing, de-swelling therapy, and anti-infection shots. Day 4 was removal of taping and column stitch. Dr. Kim will take a look at the progress and let you know how it’s healing on those dates, he told me that the accidental sneezing was find, didn’t do anything to the rhinoplasty. The staff was efficient and pleasant despite limited English. JuYeon was there and made sure to pop in to check in on me each time that I was there, she also said I can contact her via Kakao to answer any questions.
Day 7 was stitch removal on the alars and ear cartilage, Dr. Kim came and checked on my nose again to make sure the process is going well. The removal process was quick and low key kinda painful? Since my nose is still tender so it was very sensitive. My nose now has an improved but natural look. I couldn’t determine if I like the nose or the eyes yet since it’s my first time getting both surgeries and it is still a new look to me, so trying to see if I like myself after this, but I can tell that my alars are more even, smaller and the tip is more refined. Just waiting for the swelling to improve.
Before leaving Korea, I dropped my phone on my nose, which was one of the main things I tried to avoid. Luckily it only caused it to swell, but nothing major happened. Will update as the time goes on
